Hearing Tests in Albuquerque, NM
A hearing test can be beneficial for patients of all ages, even those who do not show signs of hearing loss. The purpose of a hearing test is to assess your ability to hear different sounds and frequencies in both quiet and in noise. This is the first step in determining if hearing loss is present and identifies the best way to manage it. During your hearing exam our audiologists will perform a series of tests, including:
- Pure Tone Testing
- Bone Conduction Testing
- Speech Testing
- Tympanometry
- Acoustic Reflex Testing
We also offer pediatric hearing tests to assess the hearing ability and cochlea function of your child. The two most common pediatric hearing tests that we offer are:
- Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)Testing: Determines whether a specific type of hearing loss exists.
- Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) Testing: Determines if there is a blockage in the ear canal, excess fluid in the middle ear, or damage to the hair cells of the cochlea.
If you suspect you or your child may have a hearing loss, contact us today for an appointment.
Hearing Aid Fitting
To help you hear better, hearing aids require professional fitting and programming. When our audiologists recommend hearing aids, they will counsel you on how to properly use, care for, and adjust to your new devices. The first step is to fit the hearing aids to your exact ear shape, so they sit comfortably yet securely in/around the ear.
Then, our audiologists will program the hearing aids based on the results of your audiogram. Hearing aids should provide the wearer with a comfortable amount of amplification and be able to provide clarity in your specific listening environments.
Hearing Aid Repairs in Albuquerque, NM
Hearing aids are built to withstand many years of use and daily wear. They do however require regular maintenance to ensure they are functioning properly. At Albuquerque Speech Language Hearing Center, our hearing specialists are experts in hearing aid technology and can perform maintenance checks and deep cleanings on your devices.
Many repairs can be made in the office on the same day. For more serious repairs, we may have to send your hearing aids to the manufacturer to be fixed.
Custom Earmolds
At Albuquerque Speech Language Hearing Center, we can create custom earmolds for hearing aids and hearing protection. We will take an impression of your ear and create an earmold out of silicon. For hearing protection, custom fit earmolds and earplugs are useful at blocking out harmful noise levels while allowing you to still hear the sounds around you. It’s important to protect your hearing by wearing earplugs to decrease your risk of noise induced hearing loss.
If you are interested in being fit with custom earmolds, contact our office today.
Treating Hearing Loss with Surgery
There are two main types of hearing loss: sensorineural and conductive. Sensorineural hearing loss is when there is an issue with the hearing nerve and can only be managed with hearing aids. Conductive loss is when there is an issue with the outer or middle ear and can typically be corrected.
Some causes of conductive hearing loss that can be corrected surgically include:
- Malformations of the outer or middle ear structures
- Chronic ear infections
- Fluid in the middle ear
- Perforated eardrum
- Benign tumors
- Impacted earwax
- Foreign objects in the ear
- Head trauma
- Otosclerosis
Common surgeries used to correct conductive hearing loss are:
- Stapedectomy
- Myringotomy
- Tympanoplasty
- Mastoidectomy
- Surgery to remove acoustic neuromas
If you have conductive hearing loss that could be treated surgically, we will refer you to a trusted surgeon or specialist in the area.
