Tinnitus
Relief for ringing in the ears is possible.
What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when none is externally present. Also known as “ringing in the ears,” tinnitus is a common phenomenon, affecting millions of people. Those who hear these phantom sounds describe them as a buzzing, humming, ringing, whistling, or whizzing sound. Everyone experiences tinnitus differently. For some they hear the sounds occasionally while others hear them constantly. The severity of tinnitus can differ so greatly that it may not be a concern for some while it can disrupt sleep, concentration, and quality of life for others.
Tinnitus Evaluations
If you have persistent tinnitus that is affecting your life, the experts at Albuquerque Speech Language Hearing Center can help. We offer tinnitus evaluations (also known as a tinnitus test) to determine the cause of your tinnitus and the best management plan.
During a tinnitus evaluation, we will administer:
- An in-depth review of your medical history
- A pure tone and ultra-high frequency audiometry test
- Speech reception and word recognition tests
- Tinnitus matching test for pitch, intensity, and masking ability
- An otoacoustic emissions test
These tests will allow our audiologists to find the best management plan for your tinnitus.
Tinnitus Treatment
While there is no cure to stop ringing in the ears completely, there are management options that can help reduce your perception of tinnitus. For some people, treating the underlying causes of tinnitus can help alleviate the symptoms. Tinnitus can be caused by certain medications, loud noise exposure, circulatory problems, or stress/anxiety. Sometimes treating these conditions can help with tinnitus.
At Albuquerque Speech Language Hearing Center, we offer a few tinnitus treatment options that can help patients successfully manage tinnitus. These include:
- Acoustic Therapy
- Tinnitus Masking Hearing Aids
- Counseling
- Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Treatment for tinnitus begins with an evaluation. If you are struggling with persistent tinnitus, contact our office today. We can diagnose tinnitus and help you find the right management plan.
